Haven Behavioral Hospital of Albuquerque Opens Adult Behavioral Health Unit

Haven Behavioral Hospital of Albuquerque is pleased to announce the opening of The Sandia Unit, a new adult behavioral health unit for those 40 to 54 years of age.

“As the medical director for Haven Behavioral Hospital of Albuquerque, I am proud to announce our new venture to open our clinical programming to include adult patients ages 40-54,” states Anthony (Tony) J. Holzgang, MD, Medical Director.  “We will have a distinct program catering to those patients with mental illness and dual diagnosis. Our specialized treatment plans and uniquely qualified health care providers should ensure that patients have the chance at sustained recovery.”

The 40 to 54 age demographic is a unique and challenging niche in behavioral healthcare.  Adults in this age range are more likely to be serious about their commitment to treatment, are generally more familiar with their diagnosis and can participate in groups and other activities – which is not always true of the younger or older populations. This group does not benefit from a geriatric unit nor a regular adult unit.  Haven saw this need and invested $2 million in the local economy to provide these essential behavioral health services to those in New Mexico.  Haven began accepting patients on The Sandia Unit on February 24, 2017.

“Our expansion will allow us to serve a population that is in need of our clinical and programmatic expertise. With individual treatment planning and specialized programming, we will foster an environment that will facilitate hope and healing in order to maximize personal success after discharge,” says Sheila McDermott-Lord, Chief Executive Officer at Haven Behavioral Hospital of Albuquerque.  “It is our goal that the patients who seek our care will be treated with respect and find our stewardship an essential component to their recovery.”
