Haven Behavioral Hospital of Albuquerque Welcomes NAMI-Albuquerque as a Partner in Operation Keep Warm

nami_abq-bannerHaven Behavioral Hospital of Albuquerque, in partnership with NAMI-Albuquerque, is, once again, getting into the holiday spirit of giving and spreading cheer with “Operation Keep Warm”.  “Operation Keep Warm” is an annual project that the staff at Haven embark upon to provide much needed winter items to the homeless in the area.

The “Havenly Angels” place donation boxes at locations throughout the community to collect new hats, scarves, gloves and socks that will be donated to local organizations the week of Christmas.  Last year, over 700 items were collected and distributed.  Haven also held a contest between the donation sites to see who could collect the most items. Albuquerque Heights Rehabilitation was the winner and was treated to a luncheon for their staff compliments of Haven.  This year, the owners of Nick & Jimmy’s have graciously offered to host the winners to a meal.

“According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, mental illness is the third largest cause of homelessness.  On any given day, we are treating an individual(s) who has to come to Haven for treatment and has no home to return to upon discharge.  It is a growing problem in our city and our nation and will take many helping hands to find an answer and protect this vulnerable population.  “Operation Keep Warm” is our small contribution to a large issue,” remarked Lea Harrison, Director of Business Development at Haven.

NAMI-Albuquerque is an effective mental health organization dedicated to empowering and enlightening Albuquerque’s diverse population through advocacy, education and support.  For more information on NAMI-Albuquerque, please visit http://namialbuquerque.org/.
