June: Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month

The Alzheimer’s Association has declared the month of June to be Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month and has invited us to go purple. The goal is to create insight about the brain, Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Alzheimer’s disease is a depressive disorder that attacks the brain’s nerve cells, which can result in loss of memory, communication skills and also cause behavioral changes. This disease is incurable and it cannot be slowed down; signs of this disease may increase with age.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s is a triple threat disease. In the United States, every 67 seconds someone develops Alzheimer’s. It is the sixth leading cause of death, and it is the only cause of death in the top 10 that cannot be prevented. Though this disease can’t be stopped, there are still treatment options that can help manage the symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness needs constant consideration, but let’s make the month of June special. If you or a loved one experience any symptoms of Alzheimer’s or other types of dementia, take action now, why wait? Discovering these diseases sooner, rather than later increases the success of disease management. Take your first step, go purple!
