Keeping the Joy in the Holidays for Seniors

holida-002The holidays are here and, every year, there are multiple stories about how this may be a difficult season for seniors. But it doesn’t have to be. With a little planning, this holiday season can be one of the best yet.

  • Accept the new reality. You may not be able to do the things that you’ve always done. So, scale back on the holiday decorating by focusing on a few special decorations. Maybe you just aren’t up to the task of hosting the whole family meal. Ask for help and contribute the item that only you can. Put your energy into doing things you enjoy.
  • Pass on traditions. Perhaps it’s time to share your famous pecan pie recipe with your granddaughter. Instead of just giving her the recipe and asking her to replicate it, ask her to come over and help you bake it. You can not only show her how it’s done, but also share those little moments that will be so meaningful.
  • Find a way to give back. Rather than focusing on what you can’t do, keep an eye on what you can. Bake an extra batch of cookies to share with the new neighbors. Offer to watch children while their parents holiday shop. Let people know you appreciate them with a note of thanks.
  • Stay active. While the winter weather can make it difficult to get out, find a way to get some exercise. Maybe that’s at a gym or just walking around an area mall. Many malls open their main doors early to allow walkers to get a few laps in before stores open.
  • Seek out others who may be lonely. No matter your circumstance, there is always the chance someone else is feeling the same emotions. If you have a family gathering around the holidays, invite that person. Or if you will be alone, ask if they’d like to catch a movie together.

Rather than just letting the holidays happen, taking a proactive approach can set the stage for a joyous time of year.
